Overview

Counselor I is responsible for assisting and supporting residents through the entire treatment experience from admission through discharge.  Counselor I is responsible for contributing insightful, practical, and meaningful information to the treatment planning process.  As the Counseling team is available to the residents on a twenty-four-hour basis, careful resident monitoring and communication with the treatment team is essential.  The Counselor I makes the daily “walk” through the treatment day with the residents.  

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university
  • One-year experience working with children, mental health, counseling, or eating disorders field preferred
  • Must attend all training, education, and staff enrichment activities
  • Must possess a current Driver’s License in good standing

Responsibilities

  • Greets and welcomes new resident within 15 minutes of admission, Introduces resident to his/her primary treatment providers.
  • Orients new resident to the treatment program, its requirements, intent, and routine. Completes needed assessments within 24 hours of admission.
  • Determines whether the new resident has any special needs, communicates those needs to the treatment team and assists the resident in fulfilling those needs.
  • Monitors all resident progress through the treatment experience, communicates with the treatment team as indicated. Contributes to the Comprehensive Treatment Plan through participation in the treatment planning meeting and process.  May attend and participate in treatment planning meetings and treatment review and resident goals setting group.
  • Contributes to the well-being of all residents by serving as a positive role model, demonstrating professional and caring manner toward co-workers, residents, and guests. Treat all residents, guests and co-workers respectfully and courteously.
  • Facilitates treatment plan set forth by the Therapist by providing day-today support to residents and if residents need to “check-in”, help residents engage in a positive coping skill. Directs residents in a clear, concise, and informative manner.
  • Responsible for running and engaging residents in therapeutic groups such as coping skills, relapse prevention, DBT, psycho education, Life Skills, etc. for the expected length of time identified in the Program Schedule. Also assists in providing group ideas.
  • As Counselors are the “eyes and ears” of the milieu, they are responsible for documenting any behaviors that occur in the milieu in a very thorough and appropriate manner. Must maintain confidential nature of all resident and program related activities.
  • Assists Primary Therapist with discharge process of residents by helping resident with needs and ensuring a smooth transition.
  • Answers telephone promptly and politely and transfers any inquiries to the Therapist, Facility Administrator or Program Director.
  • Will work during meal periods in order to help model good behaviors to residents, redirect eating disorder behaviors, and to meet regulatory and approved program standards as allowed by applicable state wage and hour laws. The meals will be provided by the employer at no charge to the employee and the time will be treated as hours worked.
  • Maintains a clean environment and ensures that the house is tidy and clean at all times.
  • Familiarizes self with the Philosophy, Mission, goals, and objectives of the Center for Discovery Adolescent Treatment Programs. Complies with all Discovery policies and procedures. Attends all designated meetings.
  • Makes timely request for leave and makes sure there is coverage for any scheduled shift that is missed. All Counselors are responsible for their own shifts, including On-Call Counselors.
  • Since email is the primary form of communication within Center for Discovery, it is required to check company provided email on a regular basis.
